What is bufferbloat?
Bufferbloat is excessive delay caused by data waiting in oversized or poorly managed queues at a network bottleneck.
Bufferbloat is not simply “slow Internet.” It is a responsiveness problem. A connection can download at hundreds of megabits per second and still feel terrible when the line is busy because latency rises sharply.
A simple example
Your idle latency might be 18 ms. Start a large upload and it jumps to 180 ms. The upload itself can continue at full speed, but game traffic, voice packets and ordinary web requests now wait behind the queue. That added 162 ms is the behavior a bufferbloat test is looking for.
Common symptoms
- Gaming lag appears when someone else uploads, downloads or backs up files.
- Video calls become delayed or choppy while the connection is busy.
- Web pages feel slow to react even though a speed test reports plenty of bandwidth.
- The issue is much worse during cloud backup, large file transfers or game updates.
What usually helps
Modern Smart Queue Management (SQM) algorithms such as CAKE and fq_codel are designed to keep queues short and responsive. They often work best when the router controls the bottleneck by shaping slightly below the real line rate.
Bufferbloat is only one possible cause
