The safest order of operations

  1. Verify the symptom. One weird run is not enough.
  2. Separate Wi‑Fi from WAN. Compare Ethernet when possible.
  3. Try queue management. SQM/CAKE/fq_codel is often more relevant than buying faster service.
  4. Retest. Keep the change only if loaded latency improves without unacceptable loss of throughput.
